There is also a science to the canning procedures that help the food to stay fresh until it's opened by the consumer.
Here is a great recipe using canned goods: Fruit Salad
1 can pineapple tidbits
1 can peach pie filling
2 bananas
1 pint strawberries (fresh or frozen)
1 can mandarin oranges
Drain pineapple and mandarin oranges and mix the remaining ingredients.
