Review: A Black Tie Affair by Sherrill Bodine

About: Fashion curator Athena Smith will do anything to get her hands on the Clayworth family's couture collection for her exhibit. So she's thrilled when she's called in to authenticate the gowns...until she falls ill while examining them and wakes up face-to-face with notorious Chicago bachelor Drew Clayworth.

Drew doesn't trust Athena one bit. He still believes she betrayed him years ago. So when his family's gowns go missing and Athena offers her help in exchange for the dresses, he reluctantly accepts. But they're both taken off guard by the barely restrained passion that's still between them...and the memories that are both bitter and sweet. As they work together to find the dresses, can they resist the sparks between them?

About the Author: Sherrill Bodine has been writing stories since junior high, when she won a pair of silver skates in a state-wide essay contest. While moving twenty-two times back and forth across America and rearing her four children, she published fifteen award-winning novels under two pseudoynyms (Lynn Leslie/Leslie Lynn). Now she's decided to be herself and write about the people, parties, and high-life in the city she knows best: Chicago. When she's not in the Windy City with her husband, family, and Newfoundland and pug dogs, she's fulfilling her passion to travel to exotic locales around the world.

Review: If you are looking for a good read that is just the right mix of romance and mystery then this is your book!  Sherrill Bodine keeps the reader guessing, will Athena have a second chance at love?  The author is very knowledgeable about fashion history and this shows with the in depth descriptions of dresses, jewelry and fashion designers of the past.  While the mystery of the stolen dresses is never solved, Athena and Drew spend a great deal of time together and the events surrounding their past break up come to light.  Will they work out their feelings, or harp on them like they did years ago.   A Black Tie Affair is an easy read that will keep you intrigued until the final page.  I hope we will be reading more about the Smith sisters in the future.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of A Black tie Affair book for the purpose of this review. I learned about this opportunity from The Product Review Place.

What are your top 5 New Year's resolutions for getting healthy and fit in 2010?

  1. Drink more water: Water is so important in helping you stay hydrated when working out and helping you feel full!
  2. Eat more fruits & vegetables: Not only are we supposed to be eating fruits and vegetables everyday but they make great snacks instead of high calorie cookies.
  3. Cardio training: I was a runner in high school and even ran a 10 miler when I was a freshman in college.  Since having two children I have not had the chance make the time to get back into running.
  4. Get more sleep: If you don't get enough sleep you will not have the energy to work out.  My children are all sleeping through the night so I should be taking advantage of this.  I need to get off the computer and get to bed at a decent hour every night so I can get up and work out in the mornings before the kids are up.
  5. Strength training: Cardio will help you burn calories and strength training will help you tone.  I plan to use arm weights to tone by arms.

Pampers Cruisers with Dry Max - FREE SAMPLE

Pampers Swaddlers and Cruisers Diapers with Dry Max - Biggest Innovation in 25 Years

Pampers Swaddlers and Cruisers with Dry Max are the brand's new high performance diapers and the biggest innovation for the Pampers brand in the last 25 years. Pampers Diapers invented the Dry Max technology and applied it to the current Swaddlers and Cruisers core, which allows the diaper to be thinner than before. This game-changing diaper - Pampers' driest ever - helps lock wetness in for up to 12 hours and its less bulky design helps give flexibility and comfort - perfect for all of babies' play. The new diaper design also helps families reduce their impact on the environment by containing 10 percent less material weight. In fact, if current North American Pampers Swaddlers and Cruisers users switched to the new Pampers Cruisers Diapers with Dry Max diaper, they could together throw away the weight of 1 billion less diapers every three years (based on 08/09 volume for Swaddlers/Cruisers).
Pampers Swaddlers and Cruisers Diapers with Dry Max will be available at retail across the country beginning in March 2010. Product will be available at mass, discount, baby specialty, grocery stores and online retailers where Pampers products are sold, with the same retail pricing as the current Pampers Swaddlers and Cruisers Diapers (pricing is at the sole discretion of the retailer).

Starting TODAY parents everywhere will be able to request a free sample three-pack of Pampers Cruisers with Dry Max on Pampers.com.  If the sample sent includes a diaper stamped Team USA (randomly inserted in select sample packs), your baby will win a year’s supply of Pampers diapers!

Double Couponing

Double Couponing is when a store doubles the face value of a manufactures coupon.  Example: 0.50 cent coupon doubled = $1.00 off!  Here are some steps to help you double coupon with success.
First, you must determine if a grocery store near you doubles coupons.  You can do this by calling the store, asking on your next grocery trip or you can see a state by state list of stores that double HERE.  This is not a complete list and some stores on the list may have changed their policies.  Once you have determined that a local store doubles coupons you will want to find out if they double every day, once a week or every now and then.   My local Kroger store doubles coupons every day but a locally owned grocery store only doubles coupons on Wednesdays.

The second step is to determine up to what value your store will double.  My Kroger will only double coupons up to a 50 cent face value but another local store will double up to a 99 cent face value.  Sometimes stores will have a week long or one day doubling event where they double up to a $1 or $1.50 face value amount ($2 - $3 final discount).  Some stores will even have triples where they will triple the face value of your coupon.   You can find out about these by reading the grocery ads in your newspaper or looking for signage when you are at the store.  When stores have a special double coupon event such as doubling high dollar coupons they may have a limit on the total number of coupons you can use.   For example you can only use 20 coupons per day.  If there are great deals you can always go back later in the week to take advantage of them.  Some stores will only double a certain number of like coupons.  For example: You have 4 0.50 chex mix coupons.  The first 3 will be doubled to $1 and the 4th one with remain at 0.50.  Most of the time the double are automatically generated on the register so you will not have any problems with multiple coupons but you may want to check the screen to make sure.

Once you have found a store that doubles and determined when you can get the biggest bang for your buck you will want to organize your coupons and plan your shopping trip.  Using a coupon at a grocery store that doubles coupons may not be the best deal.  Just because you get $1 off an item does not mean that it isn’t $2 cheaper on sale somewhere else.  If there is only a .25-.50 difference you may want to pick up the item at the grocery store so you don’t have to make another stop.  You will want to search your local ads to match up sales with coupons to receive the best price!  There are also lots of websites that do all the work for you.  They will tell you what is on sale, where to get the coupon and what the final price would be.
For most of the stores you will need to make sure you have one of their shopper cards.   If you do not already have one of these they are very easy to sign up for and can be used right away.  Make sure the cashier scans your shopper card in order to take advantage of the double coupons.

You should also make sure that the coupon you want to use does not say “Do Not Double” on it as this may exclude it from the double savings.  In some cases a coupon will double regardless of whether it says DND because the cash register does the doubling automatically.  The few times that a coupon does not double it is because of a little technicality with coupons.  Pull out your coupons and take a look at the bar code on your coupon.  The very first number on the very far left is either a tiny 5 or a 9. Most of the coupons in the Sunday paper begin with a 5. The coupons that come from the “blinkie" dispensers in grocery store aisles often begin with a 9. It is the ones that begin with a 9 that do not double in stores' register systems.
Please keep in mind that the stores that offer double coupons are taking a loss on the double money.  The manufacturer only promises to pay the face value of the coupon plus additional cents for shipping.  Always remember to coupon responsibly.

The Great Trade-In Event at Toys R Us

TOYS“R”US, INC. ISSUES A CALL TO ACTION TO REMOVE POTENTIALLY UNSAFE BABY PRODUCTS FROM THE MARKETPLACE WITH
THE ‘GREAT TRADE-IN’ EVENT

After Customers Traded In Tens of Thousands of Old and Used Baby Products During 2009 Program, Company Encourages More Parents and Caregivers to Exchange Used Cribs, Car Seats or Other Baby Items for Savings on New Products

WAYNE, NJ (January 27, 2010) – Toys“R”Us, Inc. today issued a call to action for customers to rid their homes of potentially unsafe old and second-hand baby products and exchange them for savings on a new item during the “Great Trade-In” event.  The “Great Trade-In” event is a national safety program designed to draw attention to the fact that certain used baby products can carry potential hazards, but are still in circulation and are not the best candidates to be handed down or resold.

The “Great Trade-In” event begins Friday, January 29 and continues through Saturday, February 20 in Babies“R”Us and Toys“R”Us locations nationwide.  During this time, stores will accept returns of any used cribs, car seats, bassinets, strollers, travel systems, play yards, high chairs and toddler beds in exchange for a 25% savings on the purchase of any new baby item, in any of these product categories, from select manufacturers.

Toys“R”Us, Inc. introduced the “Great Trade-In” event during a three-week period in September 2009, which prompted customers to trade-in tens of thousands of potentially unsafe cribs, car seats and other baby products – most of which were in extremely poor condition.  Some traded-in items were missing parts or were damaged, while others that were decades old showed obvious signs of wear and tear and would be considered
non-compliant by today’s more stringent product safety standards.

Used car seats were the number one item customers turned in during the 2009 program and the number one item customers purchased with the savings they received in exchange for their trade-in.  Old and second-hand car seats may carry a variety of hazards that are difficult for consumers to detect, such as damage from accidents or materials’ deterioration from sun exposure.  For this reason, leading safety organizations, such as Safe Kids USA, recommend against purchasing used car seats.

“We are proud that our inaugural ‘Great Trade-In’ event raised awareness of the potential dangers associated with certain used baby products, and we were gratified by the response from our customers,” said Jerry Storch, Chairman and CEO, Toys“R”Us, Inc.  “As a company committed to the safety of children, we encourage parents to utilize the ‘Great Trade-In’ event as an opportunity to remove used and older baby products, such as cribs and car seats, from their homes, garages and attics.”

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advocates not purchasing used items that have a history of safety problems, including cribs, play yards and bassinets.  Items in these specific categories may have been recalled or affected by recent enhancements in federal and voluntary standards and regulations for safety testing that render older models unsafe or non-compliant with current standards.  For example, voluntary standards updated in December 2009 render that cribs no longer be manufactured with a drop-side following a number of recalls and associated child injuries and deaths.

Here are some additional examples of the potential dangers of old and second-hand cribs, car seats and other baby products:
  • Car seats can sustain damage in an accident that may not be visible to the naked eye, but could prevent the seat from functioning properly.
  • Car seats have expiration dates, as the materials can deteriorate over time, potentially making the car seat less effective in a crash.  Parents can check with the car seat manufacturer to determine the recommended period of use for a particular car seat.
  • Certain baby products, particularly car seats, are regularly introduced with new innovations in technology that can improve the products’ safety efficacy;
  •  Products made of or that contain certain materials, like wood and plastic, can deteriorate when exposed to extreme weather conditions, like heat, potentially compromising the safety integrity of the car seat.
  •  Parts or instruction books for proper assembly, installation or use may be missing.
Brands participating in the “Great Trade-In” event include Babi Italia, Baby Cache, Baby Trend, Bergamo, Bertini, Britax, Carter’s, Chicco, Contours by Kolcraft, Cosco, Delta, Eddie Bauer, Evenflo, Graco, Jeep, Little Tikes, Safety 1st, Sorelle and Step2.

Customers can save 25% on a new purchase, from any of the specified product categories and from any of the aforementioned manufacturers, in Babies“R”Us and Toys“R”Us stores nationwide on the day they trade in their used item.

There are no restrictions on the number or brand of used items in these product categories customers can exchange.  Day care centers or other organizations who wish to exchange items in bulk are encouraged to contact their local Babies“R”Us or Toys“R”Us store prior to returning their used items to ensure adequate availability of new merchandise.

For the latest information about product safety and to sign up to receive e-mail notifications about product recalls, customers can visit the company’s dedicated Safety website, Toysrus.com/Safety.  In addition, the CPSC advises parents to check its website, www.cpsc.gov, to make sure a product has not been recalled before using or purchasing it second-hand.

The Choice - Book Review

One moment, Carrie Weaver is planning to elope with Lancaster Barnstormer Solomon Riehl, leaving their Amish community behind. The next, she is staring into a future as broken as her heart. Now Carrie faces a choice. An opportunity. But will this decision, this moment in time, change her life forever?

"Fisher kicks off a refreshing new series, Lancaster County Secrets, with characters that are strong, both in body and spirit. They also have weaknesses that develop into strengths with the choices they make."
4 stars, Romantic Times

Review: I have read Christian fiction before but never one that centers around the Amish.  I wasn't sure what I would think at first but once I started reading it I found myself stealing any moment I could to read.  I wanted so badly to skip to the end and see what the final outcome was but i didn't.  Instead I stayed up late one night and finished the book!    Carrie makes a choice within the first few pages of the book that will change her life forever but it's not the only choice she is faced with as we are invited into her life through Suzanne's writing.  Suzanne's writing had me feeling like I was part of the story; I cared for the people in the book.  This book shows how God tests each of us with trials but he is faithful to provide for us.  The discussion questions at the end of the book make it perfect for a book club.  I will be sure to check out the next book in the Lancaster Country Series!

About the Author: Suzanne is a wife and mom, raiser of puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind, and an author of Christian books, both non-fiction and fiction.

Her relatives on my mother's side are Old Order German Baptist Brethren, also known as Dunkards. That's where her interest in Anabaptist traditions began. Suzanne's grandfather was born into a family of 13 children, started his career as a teacher in a one-room school house in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and ended it as one of the very first publishers of Christianity Today. "We called him "Deardad" even though he was a very stern fellow. Still, Deardad's life inspired me to write."

After college, Suzanne was a freelance writer for magazines and became a contributing editor to Christian Parenting Today. Her work has been featured in Today's Christian Woman, Marriage Partnership, Worldwide Challenge, among others. She took the plunge into books a few years ago and now she's hooked. Kids Eat Free!

I recently read an article discussing whether or not you should buy your child dinner at a restaurant or bring time something from home.  The conclusion of the article was that if the restaurant sold something that your child would eat you should buy it.  Most of the time children's menu items are relatively inexpensive but I hate ordering my son a $3 peanut butter and jelly that he may or may not eat.  The best solution is to eat at restaurants that have a Kids Eat Free night or eat at home (which is what we do most nights).  Here are some great lists and search sites for finding a restaurant near you that offers a kids eat free night!

Just in case bag

A few months ago we went over to my Mother in law's house for dinner and my daughter got poop on the outfit she was wearing.  I had forgotten to put an extra outfit in the diaper bag so I went rummaging around in the car to see what I could come up with.  The only thing in the car that would work was a 24 month onesie I had for my son.  Did I mention my daughter was less than 2 months old at the time!  I learned a lesson that day and as soon as I got home I started gathering items for my "just in case" bag.

Just in case
...
you forgot to restock the diaper bag
you forgot the diaper bag
you go through everything in the diaper bag
you never put it in the diaper bag in the first place

Items to include:
extra diapers (in the current size)
wipes (they may freeze during the winter, mine did!)
empty bottle
diaper sacks or grocery bags for stinky diapers
extra pair of clothes and socks for each child
pacifier
blanket
bib
burp cloth
maybe even an extra shirt for you

I keep these items in a small zippered bag in the trunk of the car and I must say it has come in handy.  I don't always get it right; I have been known to have a pacifier holder with no pacifier in it!  Don't forget to restock the "just in case" bag, you know, just in case.

Do you have a "just in case" bag?  If so, what do you keep in it?  Do you have an embarrassing Mom moment like mine?

Totally Toned Arms: Get Michelle Obama Arms in 21 Days- Review & Giveaway- CLOSED

Product Description:
Once Barack Obama joined the presidential race and attended events with wife at his side, people everywhere started buzzing about Michelle's toned arms and asking how on earth she does it. Even at the Presidential Inauguration, much of the talk was about Michelle's amazing arms. Media outlets from GMA to CNN to MSNBC have covered the story, inspiring women across the country to call their personal trainers and say, "I want Obama arms!"

Certified personal trainer Rylan Duggan, creator of the successful e-book series Go Sleeveless!, constantly gets calls from clients and reporters asking for the training secrets behind Michelle's arms. Duggan is the expert quoted in much of this coverage, and in Totally Toned Arms, he offers his 21-day program to get those sleek and sexy arms.

In this low-priced paperback, Duggan reveals the program (combining strength training and cardio) including a 7-day jumpstart maintenance plan, and essential diet secrets designed to shed fat and reveal toned muscle. This is a simple program that anyone can do, no matter what their fitness level, at home and with little equipment. With this series of 25 easy exercises, anyone can have Obama arms, in a matter of weeks!

Review: My husband and I are planning a tropical vacation this year to celebrate turning 30.  I am bound and determined to lose the baby weight and not feel like I have to wear a sweater over a short sleeve shirt.  Totally Toned Arms shows you that you don't have to have a pricey gym membership or even a home gym to get toned.  All you need is a few dumbbells, a resistance band, an exercise ball and a little motivation.

Rylan places importance on three areas for getting and staying toned.  I also learned that it is important to eat the right foods and exercise so that you are continually burning calories; even while you sleep!  Strength training, eating right and cardio training are all key to totally toned arms!  The nutritional information alone has encouraged me to make some lifestyle changes in my families eating habits.  Each strength training exercise is described in detail and pictures are included with a home version and gym version.  The cardio portion is "interval" work which will help boost your metabolism.  The good thing about the cardio portion is you don't have to do the same cardio activity every day, you can change it up.  Some of the cardio activities Rylan recommends are jogging, elliptical trainer, rowing, swimming, shadowboxing or skipping rope.

Each of the 21 days are mapped out for you making it very easy to follow and get your Michelle Obama arms!  The final chapter provides information on the importance of keeping up with your exercise and healthy eating habits in order to maintain the body tone for which you have worked so hard.  This is a great book with lots of helpful information for anyone looking to work on their arms and better habits for their whole life!

Make sure and bookmark RylanDuggan.com and GoSleevelessBlog.com.  Rylan is constantly posting new exercise techniques, nutritional advice and other helpful information on these sites.  You can also follow @CoachRylan on Twitter.

Review:

I received a magnet, greeting card and tote bag featuring OOPSY's Valentine's Day and sugar pop designs.  I have been using the tote bag to carry books around in and it's very sturdy.  Tote bags always come in handy and the best part is it is reusable.  The magnets would be great for posting your child's artwork, tests or awards on the refrigerator.  I am a huge fan of personalized items; they make everything a little extra special!

OOPSY has products for everyone.  Some of the other items sold in the store are, tiesshoes, computer lovers gifts, you can even make birth announcements.  Planning a party?  The fancy cupcakes onesie would make a perfect 1st Birthday shirt for your little one.  You can customize invitations and find personalized items that will make the best party favors!  OOPSY can also help with your business promotion; check out the letterhead, business cards and fun size flair.

I could spend all day browsing the products at OOPSY and thinking of the ways I could use and personalize them.  OOPSY creates new designs and products several times a day so be sure and check back often.  You can keep up with OOPSY's great products on twitter and facebookI will continue checking in on OOPSY's designs.  Once you see the variety and high quality products you will be a regular visitor too!

PachaMamma Baby Sling - Review

I won a gift certificate to PachaMamma's Handmade Gifts  right around the time my daughter was born.  I knew I was going to have to try out babywearing because; I couldn't sit around holding her all the time with a toddler running around.  I was so excited to see the selection of baby slings in PachaMamma's Handmade Gifts Etsy shop.

I was a little concerned at first that it wouldn't fit, but she custom makes them to fit you!  The sling size is based on your measurement from shoulder diagonally to hip bone.  When I received the sling in the mail I immediately put it on and put the little one in it!  There have been a few afternoons when the only way I could get my daughter to sleep was to put her in the sling and pat her butt.

I have used the sling while out shopping, at my Moms group and around the house.  This baby sling has been a life saver for me.  My daughter is now 13+ pounds and we are still able to use it.  The baby sling is machine washable, another life saver!

The fabrics, quality and friendliness of this shop make it a must add to your favorite sellers on Etsy.  If you are not in the market for a baby sling you will find lots of other great handmade items in PachaMamma's shop.  She has toys, baby bibs, shopping cart covers, aprons, even a coupon organizer!

Disclaimer: I won a gift certificate to PachaMamma's shop and purchased my baby sling with it.  No compensation was provided.  All views expressed are my own.

Massive Stroller and Crib Recall

635,000 cribs made by Dorel Asia SLR. The drop-side hardware on the cribs can fail, causing the drop side to detach from the crib. When the side detaches, it creates a space in which an infant or toddler can become entrapped and suffocate or strangle. CPSC and Dorel Asia received a report of the death of a 6-month-old from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who became entrapped and strangled in a crib after the drop-side hardware broke. The recalled cribs also pose a serious entrapment and strangulation hazard when a slat is damaged. The cribs were sold at K-Mart, Sears and Wal-Mart stores nationwide from January 2005 through December 2009 for between $120 and $700. To see whether your crib is on the recall list, look for the model number on a bottom rail of the crib. Photos of the cribs along with their model numbers are posted above.  Parents and caregivers, you should immediately stop using the recalled cribs and find an alternative safe sleeping environment for your child. Contact Dorel Asia for a free replacement kit through its Web site at www.dorel-asia.com or by calling the company at (866) 762-2304 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. ET Monday through Friday. For more information on this recall click here.

Graco Children’s Products is recalling 1.5 million Passage, Alano and Spree strollers. Some styles of the products have hinges on the canopy that could cut and/or amputate a child’s fingertip when the canopy is opened or closed.  The strollers were sold at AAFES, Burlington Coat Factory, Babies “R” Us, Toys “R” Us, Kmart, Fred Meyer, Meijers, Navy Exchange, Sears, Target, Walmart and other retailers nationwide between October 2004 and December 2009 for between $80 and $90 for the strollers and between $150 and $200 for the travel systems.  Parents and caregivers should immediately stop using the recalled strollers and should contact Graco at (800) 345-4109 or through the firm’s Web site (http://www.gracobaby.com) to receive a free protective cover repair kit.  For more information on this recall click here.

Hearing loss among young people on the rise

ASHADid you know that when MP3 players are purchased as gifts, the majority of purchasers are moms? That finding emerged at the Mommy Tech summit at the recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show.

But do you know about the potential risks? Kids often don't know how to use audio technology safely and they can harm their hearing as a result.  In fact, hearing loss among young people is reported to be on the rise and there are strong concerns that a generation of young people could end up with prevalent hearing loss.

"For some time, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) has warned that hearing loss in the United States could rise significantly due to the misuse of personal audio technology," ASHA President Tommie L. Robinson, Jr. explains. "Unfortunately, a report released today by the Kaiser Family Foundation cites some alarming trends about excessive entertainment media consumption among our nation's children, indirectly supporting ASHA's concerns. This should be a warning to parents that they must regulate children's exposure and fully understand the potential health threats associated with misuse and over exposure to such technologies."

"ASHA will continue to bring these issues to the forefront and appreciates the Kaiser Family Foundation's contributions to the national dialogue," Robinson adds.

According to a 2004 study by the Kaiser Family Foundation, children were reported as being exposed to 6 hours and 21 minutes of media (TV, music, internet, etc) per day. By 2009, this statistic had increased dramatically to 7 hours and 38 minutes per day. When media multitasking is taken into account, this leaps to 10 hours and 45 minutes per day. This massive consumption of media has led to decreased grades in school and ASHA contends it puts kids at an increased risk of hearing loss.
One thing that is clear from the study is that parents can be very positive influencers on how their children use entertainment media.
How You Can Help - Spread the Following Message
Whether your child received an MP3 player, gaming device, cell phone, laptop, or any other device with headphones, don't overlook the important health threat of hearing loss. Now is the time to reach out to other parents about the importance of hearing loss prevention, the damaging effects of excessive media consumption, and the resources available to them through ASHA.
Here are two simple ways to protect your children's - and your own - hearing.
·         Keep the volume down. A good guide is half volume.
·         Limit listening time. Give your hearing 'quiet breaks'.

Find more information and statistics at ASHA's website.  You can also follow their Twitter feed or fan them on Facebook to get real time updates on their work.
