Tips from Mommy’s Guide to Cars & Tires e-book

Tire Maintenance
  • Check the Tread Condition of Your Tires: Place a penny upside down in the most shallow tread groove. If you can see the top of Lincoln ’s head, then your tires need to be replaced (they are under 2/32″ of an inch).
  • Rotate Tires Regularly: Front tires tend to wear more quickly than rear tires. Periodical rotation of front and rear tires helps balance tread wear and extend the life of your tires. A good rule of thumb is to rotate them at every other oil change (or every 6,000 miles).
  • Checking the Air Pressure: Recommended tire pressure can be found on your vehicle’s tire placard on the doorjamb, the glove box or your vehicle’s owner’s manual – not on the tire’s sidewall, which is actually the maximum air pressure allowed. Check your tire pressure at least once a month when tires are cold (before driving one mile or three hours after driving).
Auto Maintenance
  • Change Engine Oil and Filter: Your engine’s oil and oil filter should be changed every 3,000 to 4,000 miles. Engine oil lubricant breaks down over time and needs to be changed frequently to protect the engine. When changing your oil, also have the oil filter replaced. It keeps dirt and particles away from the critical components in your engine, so be sure to have it changed to ensure clean burning and maximum efficiency.
  • Replace Clogged Air Filters: Change your air filter every 15,000 miles to prevent long-term damage to your engine’s internal components. Air filters help extend the life of the engine by keeping impurities in the air from penetrating it.
  • Check Your Fluids: Make sure your brake, power steering, coolant and transmission fluids are changed every 30,000 miles or so. The fluids can break down over time and need to be replaced. While they usually can be topped off at routine service intervals, be sure to change them regularly to protect your engine.
  • Money-Saving Driving Habits
  • Do drive the speed limit. At speeds above 60 miles per hour, gas mileage decreases rapidly.
  • Do use the air conditioning sparingly to save gas. Instead, while in town, roll down your car’s windows and enjoy the breeze.
  • Do park in the first spot you find. Not only is the exercise good, but you’ll save gas that would be used up driving around the parking lot in search of a closer spot.

A Sportscaster's Guide to Watching Football Book Review

A Sportscaster's Guide to Watching Football: Decoding America's Favorite GameA Sportscaster's Guide to Watching Football: Decoding America's Favorite Game By: Mark Oristano

Product Description:
Want to know what everyone is cheering about? Learn to enjoy and understand the game with the football fanatic in your life. This book is the ultimate football guide for the novice fan. You will get answers to such complex questions as: What is that yellow line on the field and why does it keep moving? What down is it and why do I care? What is a 'T formation'? Laced with hilarious and insightful anecdotes from Mark Oristano's thirty-year career as a pro football sportscaster, A Sportscaster's Guide to Watching Football will turn you into a football-watching pro, or at least, let you fake it. Time Out: I was in the locker room before a game, and I saw an Oilers linebacker furiously drawing on his shoes with a permanent marker. This player, like many, had his ankle tape applied over the outside of his shoes instead of inside, which obviously covered the shoe logo. And he was drawing the logo of his shoe contract on the tape. "Wouldn't it be easier," I asked him, "to get taped inside and not have to do the artwork?" "Yeah, it would," he replied, "but then I'd actually have to wear their damn shoes, and I hate 'em. So I wear the brand I like and do it this way instead."

Review: My love for football started during my college years.  We had a great team and the feeling of being in the stadium with 60,000+ of your closest friends was thrilling every Saturday.  I could fade into the crowd and it didn't matter that I had the slightest clue what might be going on until I met my husband a football fanatic.  I have tried to keep up and learn here and there, after reading A Sportscaster's Guide to Watching Football I fell confident that come Fall I will be able to hang in with the guys and be more knowledgeable.

The author breaks down every detail of the game and players roles.  He provides great trivia that will have you sounding smarter before your finished with the first chapter.  There are over 17 "cool things to say during the game" inserted throughout the book.  I can only imagine what my husband would think if he hear my saying some of these great lines while we're watching the game.

The back of the book includes a glossary which I know I will be going back to time and time again as the football season gets underway.  While I enjoy watching this sport with my husband after reading this book I feel like I can engage more and game may be more enjoyable for everyone!  I recommend this book to anyone who is looking to gain knowledge through an easy to follow guide.

Buy it: You can purchase A Sportscaster's Guide to Watching Football online or at a book retailer near you.

                                                                         www.littlegrips.com
Review: When we first received the Little Grips utensils my son got all excited because he knew it was something for him.  I washed them in the dishwasher and had them ready for him at dinner time one evening.  He would pick one of them up, put it down, pick it up and look at it and put it down.  After a thorough inspection he used the fork to pick up his mac and cheese.  I found that it was easier for him to get the mac and cheese on his fork because of the unique design of Little Grips.  He is able to put more pressure on the food making it easier to pick up.  Most recently we tried the Little Grips spoon with chocolate pudding and it worked great.  I usually have to change his shirt immediately after eating pudding because he is wearing half of it but with the Little Grips spoon he was able to get more food in his mouth!

You can keep up with Little Grips on facebook and twitter.

Buy it: You can purchase Little Grips utensils online for $10.95.

Kroger = Good Customer Service

The other day my mother in law was telling me about a phone call she recently received from Kroger.  It turns out she had purchased one of the Marie Callender meals that had recently been recalled.  They were calling to check in and make sure she had heard about the recall and let her know she could bring the product back to the store for a refund!  This is one of those instances when using a frequent shopper card has paid off.

What do you think?

Savvycents Wallet Review & Giveaway

About: Savvycents was first formed in January of 2009 after Melinda Claudpierre read a book about becoming debt free and following the cash envelope system of budgeting.

Frustrated with paper envelopes and disorganization with her wallet, she wanted to create a wallet that would allow her to keep her cash in separate categories and also give quick access to her drivers license, coin holder, and all of her discount cards and coupons. The Savvycents wallet allows you to have all these thing in an attractive wallet that every woman would love to carry.

Melinda Claudepierre - President and creator of Savvycents is a stay-at-home mom of three kids and has been married to Jon for thirteen years. She is a former teacher.

                                                                  - savvy-cents.com

Review:

I was so excited when I first read about savvycents, and even more excited when I received the pink wallet!  My husband and I have just started getting serious about a strict budget.  While we haven't gone to 100% cash for everything I was still able to use this wallet as a money saving/budgeting organizing tool.  For items I pay cash I was able to keep the cash in the wallet and with other items such as gas or groceries I was able to keep the receipts in a specific section to keep track of them easily.  I love that this wallet zips all the way around, this helps to keep items from falling out.  The patent leather and embellished savvycents logo come together in a wallet your friends will be asking you about.

I'm not a fan of my license picture so it's hiding in the card slots!  I would much rather look at my cute kids when I open my wallet.  You could also put a quote or picture of something you are saving for.  These might help you to think twice about the purchase you are about to make.  I carry around a lot of coupons so the wallet would be busting at the seems if I tried to store them all in it.  However if I'm just picking up a few things or have a restaurant coupon I will store it in the wallet so I don't have to spend a lot of time searching for the coupon.  If you like to carry a small purse or are new to couponing this wallet can help you get on the path to savings.

The quality of this wallet is amazing.  It stands up to department store wallets but is created to help you save money, which is a basis I admire.  I have had a great time using this wallet and will continue to keep it in my purse long past this review.  Whether your looking for a budgeting tool, coupon folder or a new wallet Savvycents is a great solution.

Buy it: You can purchase a Savvycents wallet online or at select retailers.  This fashionable wallet comes in black patent leather, red patent leather and pink patent leather for $24.99!

Win it: 1 lucky Coupon Clippin' Mommy reader will win their very own Savvycents wallet in black!

Mandatory Entry: Visit Savvycents and tell me your favorite thing about this product.
Please make sure if your email address is not visible in your blogger profile you leave one in your initial entry!

Guest Post- New Law Protecting Kids from Big Tobacco

As a father, I know how hard parents try to protect our kids from danger. I hope all parents join me today in celebrating the one-year anniversary of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which gives the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulatory authority over the tobacco industry. With 1,000 children becoming addicted every day and another 3,900 children picking up their first cigarette, this legislation is necessary to safeguard our kids from Big Tobacco’s predatory and deceptive marketing.

The law has already banned the manufacturing and distribution of candy- and fruit-flavored cigarettes that were intended to entice kids to start smoking. Beginning this month, the sale of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco to minors will be prohibited by federal law and tobacco vending machines will be banned except in adult-only facilities. Additionally, we will see:

• larger, stronger warning labels on smokeless tobacco products
• a ban on the use of misleading descriptions such as “light” “mild” or “low-tar” in marketing and packaging cigarettes
• a ban on all tobacco-brand sponsorships of sports and cultural events
• a ban on virtually all free tobacco samples and giveaways of non-tobacco items, such as hats and T-shirts, with the purchase of tobacco
• a prohibition on the sale of cigarettes in packs of less than 20. This will eliminate so-called “kiddie packs” that make cigarettes more affordable and appealing to kids.

We expect that with effective implementation, the law will have a huge impact on ensuring that fewer kids start to smoke.

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), the American Cancer Society’s advocacy affiliate, and its volunteers were strong advocates for this legislation and are working to ensure that the law is implemented as strongly as possible. To find out more about this law and ACS CAN’s efforts, please visit http://acscan.org/protectkids and participate in our Twitter party…

Smoking-related diseases remain the most preventable cause of death in the world. This law will help to deter our kids from smoking. Thank you for being a part of the fight to protect our kids from Big Tobacco.

John R. Seffrin, PhD
Chief Executive Officer, American Cancer Society and The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN)

On June 29, the ACS CAN Twitter account will be hosting a Twitter chat where the organization will answer any questions on this legislation or impact of these tough new tobacco rules. The live Twitter chat will take place on June 29 from 2-3pm EST at @ACSCAN. Do you have a question about the new tobacco regulations? This Twitter chat will be the perfect place to get them answered.

Secrets Of The Mountain DVD Review

Product Description: Exclusive 2-Disc Bonus Pack includes "Secrets Of The Mountain" DVD and "Secrets Of The Mountain Soundtrack" CD by Randy Jackson. "Secrets Of The Mountain" - Can a family survive an ancient mystery? Somewhere between the demands of her career, her ex's wedding and her kids' busy schedules, Dana James (Paige Turco, "The Agency") is noticing her tight-knit family starting to unravel. An unexpected offer to purchase her family's mountain property sets up a weekend road trip, which she hopes will bring her family back together. But when they arrive, they quickly learn that the mountain is much more than it seems. An ancient secret and a treacherous quest will test the family like never before. It's an edge-of-the-seat thriller that reminds us that when times are tough, families don't run away from problems - they run back to each other.

Review: Secrets of the Mountain is a cute family movie for the summer.  This movie provides action and adventure.  Dana James plays a divorced Mom with three children and a demanding job as a lawyer.  She's been burring herself in her work since the divorce and seizes the opportunity to take her kids away for a few days.  The events that unfold over the next hour show how a family can pull together and make the best out of a bad situation.  Enjoy this movie on a Friday night with the kids or let them watch it with friends, I did not come across any scenes that would cause me to fast forward if children were in the room!

Buy it: You can pick up the family friendly movie, Secrets of the Mountain 2 disc bonus pack at Wal Mart.

Disclosure:  I received a copy of this DVD for review purposes.  No other compensation was received.  All views expressed are my own opinions.

CSN Stores Review Coming Soon!

Have you heard about CSNstores.com?  If not, you're in for a real treat.  If you have then you know they offer a huge selection of products.  I could spend all day searching for great products to share with you all.  One thing I am looking for are some new lights for our bedroom.  Kids stuff is always a huge hit around here and I am always looking so some new fancy product for the kitchen!  Be sure and check back for my review of a really awesome product here in just a few weeks.

Potty Time

My son has been telling us more and more when he needs a diaper change and I have put off potty training long enough...or so I thought. I'm really not sure I have the patience for this! I put him on the potty before his bath turned shower while screaming to get out,

This is the first time he has sat on a little potty seat on the big potty. We have a potty chair but I have heard mixed things about it. Since he will probably have a potty seat at Grandparents house etc. I thought it might be good just to skip to that. He sat on the potty, and sat, and sat...and sat... I think he must have sat on the potty for over 30 minutes...and nothing... We did praise him for sitting on the potty and he kept pointing in the toilet saying "pee pee goes in there."  He was rewarded for his time with York peppermint patty pieces that I passed off as m&m's.  He sat on the potty one more time before bed and we will try multiple times tomorrow.  It should be interesting to juggle my daughter (who doesn't like me to be out of her sight) and my son's time on the potty.  I'm not sure if I am excited, anxious or grossed out about this phase of life.  I guess I won't know that until he actually does something in the potty...at least I hope it makes it in the potty...

Marriott Introduces New Crib Experience at Five Brands and More Than 2500 Hotels -- Because Tots Travel Too™

Tots Travel Too™, is a program designed to make travel easier for families with young children, available at more than 2,500 Courtyard, Fairfield Inn & Suites, SpringHill Suites, Residence Inn and TownePlace Suites hotels in the continental U.S. and Canada.

The complimentary Tots Travel Too program provides guests, upon request, with a travel crib and laundered COVERPLAY® removable crib slipcover to ensure their “traveler-in-training” can rest comfortably.  For a bit of bath time fun, a complimentary gift comes with the COVERPLAY, an animal squirtie toy.  In addition, parents who have forgotten to pack their tot's essentials can contact the front desk for complimentary items, including outlet covers, nightlights, baby shampoo, and baby lotion, plus disposable bibs will be available in the breakfast areas.

Wow, this is exciting news for parents everywhere.  I find it can be very stressful traveling with little ones.  Who knew that such little beings can require so many things.  Knowing there will be quality baby items on the other end of the trip will have me going out of my way to stop at one of the participating hotels.  You can view more photos on Marriott's Flickr site.

Twitter Party: Mark your calendars for the July 1st from 9:00 to 10:00 p.m. ET!  Tips from The Motherhood circle will be shared, the Tots Travel Too program will be discussed, and over $2,000 in prizes will be awarded to participants.    The hashtag to follow is #TotsTravel2, you will also want to follow Marriott Internat'l while you are there.

Win it: 1 Coupon Clippin' Mommy reader will win the Tots Travel Too gift pack (retail value approximately $78).

To Enter: Please leave a tip for traveling with tots/children.
Make sure to leave an email address so I can contact you if you win.  Also, please leave your blog address if you have one.  The winners blog name and address will be posted in press releases relating to this campaign!

Momcepts Review 3 - Great Shopping Prodcuts!

The list caddy, koalabiner and koala pouch are great time saving items that will make your shopping trip smooth and hassle free.

List Caddy
Who knew that such a little product could come in so handy?  The List Caddy attaches to the shopping cart handle and can hold you list and coupons.  Using the magnets on the back you can use it at home to organize to do lists, grocery lists or coupons.  It can also stand alone making it a great place for that dinner recipe you are working on.  I have had the opportunity to use this product a few times while shopping and at home.  I like that I can keep my list right in front of me.  I can also attach coupons so I don't forget to hand them to the cashier at checkout.  It will even hold a piece of paper up straight making it a great addition to your computer desk.  With an awesome price tag you may want to pick up a few of these.  One for your purse, one for your fridge and one for your desk.  Friends and fellow shoppers will be asking your were you found such a neat item.

The List Caddy is available for $1.99 each and comes in 6 colors (red, green, blue, white, pink, and purple) plus 2 special edition versions: The Pink Ribbon and the American Flag.

Koalabiner
The Koalabiner purse hanger has a super cute design.  The shape reminds me of a Koala's head while being extremely functional.  You can use this carabiner style clip to attach your purse to a shopping cart handle, stroller, possible even a chair at the restaurant.  This product is just the right size for storing in your purse so it's handy when you need it.  With it's creative design you may even want to leave it attached to the outside of your bag.  The ears of the koala are just the right size for fitting snuggle over the stroller or shopping cart handle.  I don't have a lot of storage in my stroller with two little ones in it so I have even used this to hold a few bags while shopping at the mall.

The Koalabiner offers a more secure way to hold your purse than placing in the cart basket, because the latch of the Koalabiner closes around the handle, preventing your purse from being easily removed. The Koalabiner is made of lightweight, but strong, aluminum.

Koala Pouch
The Koala Pouch shopping organizer is a nylon pouch which wraps over the shopping cart handle and fastens with velcro. It has a rear zipper pocket which holds 2 compact reusable shopping bags (included). The front zipper pocket comes with tabbed dividers for organizing coupons, and the front clear pocket can hold a mobile phone, Blackberry, or iPhone. Finally, there's a handy pen sleeve on the front and a plastic utility clip attached to the side.

This pouch has everything you might need while out shopping without the worry of lugging a purse around.  The Koala Pouch helps you to stay organized saving you time and money.  I find myself many times digging through my purse for a pen to cross something off my list.  With the hand pen sleeve it's right there when you need it.  The zipper pocket that will fit your phone is a great feature too, I never make it to my phone when I'm out shopping.  Having it easy to access is a huge help to me.  With the clear front you can even see who's calling you before you take it out.

Buy it: Visit the "where to buy" link to locate these products online or at a store near you.
