It's All About the People Watching. My Black Friday Adventures.

Black Friday for me this year began on Thanksgiving day. I had been scouring the ads to see what, if anything was worth shopping for.  Many of you probably think, there is nothing worth fighting the crowds for and you are absolutely right, there is NOTHING worth fighting over or being rude to other people.  Why is it that Christmas time can bring out the worst in people?  Oh wait, that would be a whole other post!  Back to my story, I found some scrapbook storage that was going to be 55% off at Michael's starting at 5pm on Thanksgiving day.  Since I have been somewhat of a slacker on my list this year I thought this was the perfect gift for my mom and mother in law to pick up for me.  Wednesday night I pulled a recon and checked out all the different storage units they had at Michael's and told my Mom which two I would like while she was shopping.  Of course Andrew wanted to go shopping with Grandma so we took him along on our Thanksgiving day adventure to Michael's.  He was awesome, of course he did get a few treats while we were shopping.  Michael's was by far the nicest place, both the people and the checkout process.  One woman was seriously doing a scrapbook room, one I dream of but anyways...she had this one really cute storage cube so I asked if they could go back and see if they had anymore of that particular one.  Nope, of course not but that's okay there really was plenty to choose from, although it did take me about an hour to finally pick out the ones for my Mother in law to get me.  While I was going back and forth the nice woman came back over and handed me the cube, once she went through her cart, she realized she had picked up two of them and wanted me to have this one.  Wow, people can truly be nice!  Checkout was painless and our trip lasted about an hour and a half with a savings of 55% on most items and 30% on a few small items.

Once we were home, we enjoyed some cupcakes and got the kids settled in bed.  Then it was off to Toys R Us.  They had a Thomas the Train Early Engineers set for 12.49 and I had a $10 off coupon, making it $2.49 for a $24.99 item, a savings of 90%.  Of course, there was always the chance that they would be sold out or not want to honor the coupon but I was willing to take the chance until we got closer to Toys R Us.  They opened at 10pm and we were there at about 9:15pm, the parking lot was already full and we could see people were parking next door at Walmart so we parked and started walking over.  I should have known better when I saw people walking away from the store.  The line weaved in and around the entire parking lot, over 1,200 people in front of us.  What were my chances of getting the train set???  I was ready to turn around and go home but my Mother in law said "Oh come on lets stay for a little while."  We had some great conversations with the folks in line with us, even meet some fellow Hokies.  At roughly 10:20 we finally made it into the store.  They had a private company working security counting everyone to make sure they didn't exceed the fire safety number.  No carts were to be seen, I headed off to the Train section and saw a set but thought, "no way, they couldn't still have them."  They did!  They had two of them and I had two coupons...of course I had to wait in the most insane line I had seen in my whole life to see if they would take my coupons...but what else did I had to do right?  We picked up a few things for my daughter and headed to find the end of the line.  To their credit they did have lots of arrows pointing you to the line.  Again, they weaved in and out of over 14 aisles, which was lots of fun when someone wanted to shop down one of those aisle.  We met a nice man who was shopping for his 5 kids and another couple with a 21 month old who told us the gift we had picked out for my daughter was great and they had researched it before buying.  One hour and 15 later it was our turn and the true test of whether or not all that waiting had paid off, would they take the coupon?  At first the poor cashier couldn't figure it out so she called her manager over.  My fingers and toes were crossed that he wouldn't make a big deal about getting a $25 item for $2.50.  He was awesome and showed her how to do it, success!  Toys R Us is also offering 10% back to rewards members during the holiday shopping season.  For me that won't really amount to anything but it did for some of those shoppers spending hundreds of dollars.

It was now roughly 12:30 and we decided to head home and get something to eat before we headed back out to be at Kohls for a 3am opening.  I took a 30 minute power nap which in the end was probably the wrong idea but there was no turning back and we left the house about 2. The Kohls line wasn't too long when we arrived so we set out and begin discussing our strategy.  The two "hot" items we wanted were on two different sides of the store.  I was picking up some flatware and my mother-in-law was going to pick up some toys.  Needless to say once I got in the store, I was all turned around and passed the kids stuff first.  I grabbed two things on the list and headed down the aisle to the housewares, passing my mother in law.  Kohls appeared to be well stocked of their bonus buys.  We took our time getting the rest of the things on the list and tried to find the end of the line.  Our line didn't appear to be moving as quick as the other one and we later found out it's because that line was leading to only 3 cash registers not the 10 at the front of the store.  We're so thankful to the nice associate that told us that.  At Kohls we met at Grandfather and Grandmother shopping for their 8 Grandchildren.  It was so cute watching them shop.  They had a list of at least 5 stores they were planning to visit today and what time they wanted to be there (we ran into them at Target later).  By the time we checked out at Kohls it had been 2 hours.  Since my mother in law works at Kohls in the evenings she gets an extra discount on top of sales and any coupons.  This makes for some great savings!  The biggest deal at Kohls was the flatware.  It was an Oneida 85 piece set for $48, original price of $159.99.  After her discounts the total was $35...hmmm maybe I should have gotten some too.  That's an 80% savings!  I love how Kohls receipt shows you how much you saved...are you ready...$357!  Yep you read that right.  I would say it was worth the trip.  I was able to help my mother in law pick up some gifts for the grandkids and my husband...oh and the flatware was for her!!!  She deserves it!  Since it was only 5am we decided to head on over to Target and check on something for hubby.

Thankfully the store had been open for an hour so there was no line to get in.  It was a little crazy inside but we got what we came for plus one additional item and headed to the checkout...line...and I mean LINE.  I have been Black Friday shopping for years and this is the worst I have ever seen it.  Targets line was wrapped up and down the entire health/beauty section and the pet aisles.  It moved at a decent rate and we got out in about an hour.  Total savings at Target was a $10 gift card not great but what better thing could I have been doing...oh wait sleeping... 

With one last stop at Chic fil a we were home free.  My feet have never been so happy in their life.  Now if only I could finish the last few stragglers on my list and get things wrapped up before December 1st I would call it a successful shopping season.

As I write this, I stare at all the ads strewn across the hallway acting as snow for my son's creative imagination; I wonder.  Will I do this again next year?  The answer ,of course, after all it's all about the people watching!

Review:  I was lucky enough to receive a purple and green tutu to try out on my daughter.  This is her first tutu and she is so cute toddling around in the skirt.  The waist band in wrapped in ribbon giving it a very nice, finished look.  There is also a bow on the tutu in a complementing color.  I really think my daughter liked wearing her tutu around the house, she was smiling and patting it.  I see many more tutus in our future.  A girl in a tutu is a camera worthy event!
