Review: I cook a lot for our family and I will admit I am a pretty messy cook. Just a few months ago our daughter was diagnosed with celiac disease which meant a big change in her diet. It also meant a change in the kitchen and how I cook. When I was given the opportunity to review my choice of apron and have it embroidered "I cook gluten free" was the first thing that came into my head. Review: My husband has been a Rams fan for a long time, a football fan for even longer so I was very familiar with who Kurt Warner was. Throughout the book I remember mentioning bits and pieces of it to my husband and he remembered those events in the Warner's lives. In One Call Away Brenda opens the door to her life and invites you in. She's open, honest and shares the good, bad and the ugly parts of her life as a daughter, sister, wife and mother.

I have to say my favorite part of the book was the pictures. Brenda included pictures of herself and those important to her story. It helped to put faces to the names I was reading about. This helped to draw me in and keep my attention as I could envision who she was talking about.

One Call Away is an easy read, with two small children in the house I was able to finish it in less than three days! Once I got started I wanted to read about what happened next, how did she handle a particular situation, etc. Whether you've heard of the Kurt Warner or not; Brenda's story about love, heartache, hope and faith will keep you interested page after page.

Hurricane Irene

My area was supposed to get a lot of rain and wind from hurricane Irene so we picked up some necessities and stayed inside to wait it out. The kids didn't mind the rain and wind and it didn't seem too bad until we looked out the back window and saw a big tree down in the yard.

Power went out about 5pm. The kids did well but my son wanted someone to sleep with him when it was time to go to bed. The next morning, power was still out so the kids and I loaded into the car in search of caffeine, tater tots and donuts. I think the power outage stimulated the local breakfast places more than usual. Lines were very long everywhere we went. Dunkin' Donuts was even closed. We headed to Kroger in search of a donut and I noticed that all their meat and dairy shelves were cleared. My guess is that they clear it all out in preparation of losing power and put it in a fridge with a generator. Anyone know?

The kids and I headed to my parents in the afternoon not sure when power would be restored. Of course it was back on shortly after we left. Had we stayed I'm sure it would not have returned. We'll probably stay here for another day or two as I don't even want to think about restocking the fridge right now!

Review:While I am not currently nursing I was intrigued by the name of this website and just had to check it out! Milk Nursingwear was nice enough to send my sister (who had a baby back in June) the Chic Crossover Top in black. She has had the opportunity to wear it a few times and here is what she had to say.

Head Back to School With Tiny Prints

What is memorable or momentous about this particular back-to-school season?

Wow this question could have me cheering or crying in a split second...it's actually my first back to school season as a mom! That's right, my son is heading to preschool in just a few short weeks. It feels a little surreal because he doesn't have a true back to school list and were not buying new clothes or a new backpack. I do however wrestle with those same emotions most moms do as they wave goodbye to the school bus. This will be the first time I have left him with someone I don't know for an extended period of time when I am not in the same building. That's a hard thing to swallow. Maybe you seasoned moms can help, will it get any better as the days go by?

If I let myself stop and think about my son in preschool I start to wonder, will he behave, go potty when he needs too, throw a fit when they put the toys away for lesson time? For the first time I really have to have some blind trust that he will be okay and everything I have taught him will shine through; not just the bad but the good qualities he posses.

Review: I have always had a small fascination with the Wizard of Oz. I think my sister and I dressed up as characters from the movie at least two different Halloweens. I mean, a Dorothy costume with a tutu how cute is that? For a second (and I mean a short second) I considered getting a Dorothy costume for myself. I could dress the kids up as munchkins couldn't I? I may have hyped up the costumes a little bit so when the box arrive my son was eager to try it on. As soon as I my got up from her nap he insisted that she put hers on too. She did end up wearing some yogurt but I will say it came out nicely in the wash.

The costumes are both great quality. The scarecrow has many different accents, yarn at the feet, arms and the hat is part of costume so you don't have to worry about it falling off while your child is playing or off trick or treating. The tutu on the Dorothy costume give it a younger feel. The sizing charts were easy to use and my size selections fit the kids just right.

Movie Uninteruptted with Verizon Fios Flex View

I recently rented Something Borrowed on demand. It was very easy to rent and immediately available to view. I have really been wanting to see this movie so of course I started watching it right away. That is until I was interrupted...something about football and the big TV, blah, blah, blah.

I thought it was going to be a little easier than it was. I was hoping all I had to do was log into my account and the movie would be there. It wasn't quite that easy but I did get it figured out. You will need to download Verizon Media Manager. I recommend doing this now if you plan to use this feature as it may take a few minutes to get it all set up and you might be anxious to get back to your movie. Once you download the media manager you will see your rental and can download it to your PC, watch in player or copy to device. I choose to watch the movie in the player and it worked out great! If I'm traveling it looks like I can order movies and watch them right from my computer.

Chicken Anyone? Tavern on the Green Old Vine Cabernet Marinade- Review

Product Description: Our flavorful combination of mellow California cabernet vinegar and lightly roasted garlic is infused with select herbs and spices. Marinate or baste juicy cuts of beef, lamb chops and tender pork. Or whisk in extra virgin olive oil for a piquant vinaigrette.

Old Vine Cabernet Baked Chicken:
Skill level: Easy
1 package chicken tenderloins
1/2-3/4 cup Tavern on the Green Old Vine Cabernet Marinade

Directions:
Marinate chicken in 1/2-3/4 cup marinade.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Bake chicken for 10-15 minutes then flip and bake an additional 10-15 minutes

Serve with rice, vegetables or on pasta.

Review: We are trying to eat healthier at our house, this means a lot of chicken. When I opened up the Old Vine Cabernet Marinade I took it around having everyone smell it. The first time I used the marinade I didn't have a whole lot of time to let it mesh with the chicken. The chicken was baked and I served it with corn. The chicken had a good flavor but I wish I had been able to let it marinate longer.

I used the product again last night and marinated the chicken for a few hours before cooking. This time I diced it and threw it in the skillet. I cooked it on high for 10 minutes, super easy! This time around the chicken had a much richer flavor. I would really like to try this marinade on pork so that's on my menu plan sometime in the next few weeks.

At School

Walk the route to and from school with your children, pointing out landmarks and safe places to go if they’re being followed or need help. If your children ride a bus, visit the bus stop with them to make sure they know which bus to take.

Remind kids to take a friend whenever they walk or bike to school. Remind them to stay with a group if they’re waiting at the bus stop.

Caution children never to accept a ride from anyone unless you have told them it is OK to do so in each instance.

Take your child's photo (cell phone or PDA) every day before leaving to school. This will capture any outfit specifics/hairstyle details, should the need for recollection occur.

Out and About

Take your children on a walking tour of the neighborhood and tell them whose homes they may visit without you.

Remind your children it’s OK to say NO to anything that makes them feel scared, uncomfortable, or confused and teach your children to tell you if anything or anyone makes them feel this way.

Teach your children to ask permission before leaving home.

Remind your children not to walk or play alone outside.

Teach your children to never approach a vehicle, occupied or not, unless they know the owner and are accompanied by a parent, guardian, or other trusted adult.

Practice "what if" situations and ask your children how they would respond. “What if you fell off your bike and you needed help? Who would you ask?”

Teach your children how to locate help at theme parks, sports stadiums, shopping malls, and other public places. Also, identify those people who they can ask for help, such as uniformed law enforcement, security guards and store clerks with nametags.

Help your children learn to recognize and avoid potential risks, so that they can deal with them if they happen.
Teach your children that if anyone tries to grab them, they should make a scene and make every effort to get away by kicking, screaming, and resisting.

Review: I hate the thought of germs but I don't have a whole lot of time to spend cleaning. Lysol wipes are a quick and easy way to get the job done.
